Massage Therapy
Massage therapy, a systematic manipulation of the soft tissue of the body, increases blood and lymph flow, reduces stress, and improves musculoskeletal health. Having regular massages not only releives stress, but can also reduce pain, improve a depressed mood and improve sleep.
Therapeutically, massage is believed to affect all body systems, from circulation to metabolism. This includes improvement in the elasticity and tone of the skin, relaxation of the muscles, reduction of pain in muscles and joints, facilitation of respiration, enhancement of digestive processes, decrease in blood pressure, and increase in blood and lymph circulation. Recent research suggests that massage therapy may reduce stress hormones, thus improving immune function.
Massage therapy has been used to treat a long list of conditions, but is especially useful for musculoskeletal pain and stress. It is often used to restore healthy structure and function following injury and to promote recovery from fatigue following exercise. It reduces swelling and fluid retention and may slow the progress of varicose veins. Massage has been useful for some headaches and promotes sinus drainage.
